Life & Lent

In an effort to figure out a few things going on with my body I've given up certain foods. Most recently, I cut out most refined sugar and white carbohydrates (yikes, right?!). Through reading and conversations with friends I decided that it might even be worth it to try a Vegan diet for a while. In the weeks leading up to Lent I thought about what I could give up or add into my life and decided that this season would be a great time to discover how to eat without using animal products.

The first few days I had a few slip-ups but today I enjoyed a lovely brunch with friends that included several Vegan friendly foods. I made Whole Wheat Vegan Chocolate Zucchini Muffins. Yum!

I'm looking forward to sharing a bit more about this journey over the next 40 days.

Oh, Hello!

How is 2012 treating you? Professional, my year got off to a great start! In January I had the opportunity to go to NYC for a few days to attend a conference hosted by The Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness. It was wonderful to be surrounded by so many like minded people. I left energized and ready to continue in the 'fight'.

And personally? I think it's time for a change but in which way, I'm uncertain. I'm trying to put that energy (or discontentment, confusion) into things like exploring new posiblitities at work, begining to write admissions essays for graduate school, and making new friends.

I recently came across my goals for 2010 and realized they looked a lot like 2011's. This year, I'm changing that. I'll let you know how it goes. :)

I'm usually pretty reserved when it comes to talking about my dating life but after Lana posted about her hysterical boobz message she encouraged me to start documenting some of my encounters with the opposite sex as well.

So here it goes...

Last weekend when I was at a studio party sitting around with friends someone apologized after hearing about a horrible date I went on with one of her friends. Oh no! Apparently my bad dating stories are getting around…

A few months ago I went to a party at her house and a guy noticed me and asked who I was. Lana and I were getting ready to leave and said our goodbyes to the host who asked if I’d say hello to my admirer on the way out. Sure. Why not? I have nothing to lose!

When I walked past him and his friends I clearly made eye contact and was ignored. What?! Later that night I returned home and checked my Facebook to find a message in my inbox from the guy at the party.

[As I mentioned before I’ve gotten used to the whole idea that our generation does not actually ask one another out in real life.]

In my quest to be open to new possibilities I said yes to a ~~date~~/'hang out'. He asked me where we should go so I picked a location where we would run into the least amount of people I know.

I ended up being 5 minutes late but figured he would already be there since he initiated. Not there. I didn’t want to be awkward and stand around by myself so I bought a drink and sat at a table alone.

Eventually, I saw my ‘date’ walking towards the coffee shop talking on his phone. He apologized for being 15 minutes late and said it was an important call from work (late but employed, I can let it slide).

Things started to get awkward from the very beginning when he didn’t order anything. Not a thing.

We sat there and in the middle of our conversation he decided he wasn’t done with his phone and started checking his eMail.

[Okay, not interested…?]

I thought it couldn’t get worse but it did. He proceeded to talk about working out and starting a raw food diet.

I excused myself to go the bathroom only to return to him talking on the phone AGAIN.

At this point I assumed he really wasn’t interested and I was more than okay with that. Instead, he asked what my plans were for the upcoming week. I let him know that I would have to check my work schedule (and go home to decide if I am terribly picky or was this a horrible date?).

We got up to leave but I had to throw away my cup because I actually ordered something. When I turned to walk out the door with him I realized he had already done so.

[WTF?! ]

I proceeded towards the door alone…

I walked outside and he was fiddling with his phone once more. I politely said, “It was nice meeting you” and gave him a hug and he replied, “Yeah, hit me up when you’re free this week.”

I came to find out that he quickly moved onto another girl who had an equally awkward experience which reassured me that I wasn’t being overly picky and that it was simply a horrible date.

Needless to say, no one was ‘hit up’ that week.

So what gives...am I picky? Would you have given this guy a second chance?

Hello, Late Twenties!

I turned 27 on August 22 and spent the day with my mom, had dinner with family, and grabbed a few drinks with some of my sweet friends. It was a really great day. :)

Last year on my birthday I made a list of things I wanted to accomplish in the next year. A few examples: ~~go on a date from an online dating site~~, ~~switch banks~~, sell my car, ~~go to the dentist~~, ~~take two vacations~~.

This year I asked friends what I should include and they suggested I buy a road bike, read a book a month, and apply to grad school. Some are on the boring side, some should be fun, and others are going to be a total challenge.

So here is this years list:

Learn something new each month.
Complain less.
Apply to grad school.
Buy a road bike.
Sell my car.
Pay off my higher interest student loan.
Exercise 15 minutes a day.
Keep my clothes off the floor.
Spend more time with family.
Wake up earlier.
Go overseas.
Read a book a month.
Take a hip hop class.
Vote in local elections.
Learn to homebrew.
Take time off from work every 3 months.
Call my grandma more often.
Cook a new recipe every week.
Open a Roth IRA.
Visit an old friend.
Wear suntan lotion every day.
Make a new friend.
Buy local and in season produce.
Ask for help.
Take more pictures.
Get a new tattoo.
Go after what I want.

Lina Said Yes!

Yesterday I hosted an engagement party for Lina and Carl on our friends roof deck (thanks Rob and Cambria House!). Their engagement fell right around the time Lina's best friend Sara planned to visit so we quickly got things together for a little happy hour. Thanks to all who were able to make it and share such sweet words with the couple.

We had two cocktails: Vodka & Soda (Lina's favorite) and Whisky with a splash of water (Carl's favorite) and allowed everyone else to bring their drink of choice.

Summer Rules

Summer is flying by! I can't believe it's already July. I've decided that to make the most of it I really need to set some rules for myself.

So here they are:

Leave work by 6:30pm every night (minus emergencies).
Take two vacations. One down, one to go. I just got back from visiting friends in West Palm Beach!
Read three books before summer is over. I'm currently reading The Happiness Project.
Ride my bike more, drive my car less.
Involve myself in something extremely fun every weekend.
Spend time with family.
Go to the beach.
Complete applications for graduate school.
Get a real haircut.
Break a few rules!

I have a really hard time around the holidays but I don't really know why. I enjoy the season of Advent but Christmas totally stresses me out! This can be a really lonely time for some people and I think it's important to remind people that you care for them and I don't think it has to be in the form of a gift. My friend Lana is using this season to list all of the things she is thankful for. She is a wonderful lady!

I'm looking forward to the new year and I think this calendar by Erin Jang is an adorable way to keep track of 2011. Who knows what could happen in the next year. :)

This past weekend I went to Tria with my dad and sisters. It is a wine, cheese, and beer cafe my friend Angel introduced me to several years ago. They have delicious salads and sandwiches and a few different locations, one conveniently located in Rittenhouse Square across from the Park.

We sipped on wine and laughed about funny, old stories before my dad and younger sister Corinne went to the Eagles game.

After a long work week I love coming home on Friday nights and making a home cooked meal. Last night I made eggplant parmesan for me and some girlfriends. We went to a Halloween party and I dressed up as a girl scout. I wore my old brownie vest (pictures to come).

Tonight we are celebrating people who have decided to become members of our church; we call this making a covenant. Each person is recommended by someone and tonight I have the privilege of recommending my sweet friend Lina. Afterwards I am heading to Tara's 30th birthday party. I am looking forward to celebrating dear friends.

Sourdough Starter

I started with 4 ounces of whole wheat flour and 4 ounces of water in a medium sized blow. Every day for a week you discard half of the starter and add another 4 ounces of flour (after the first day you can use whole wheat or unbleached white) and 4 ounces of water.

I'm on day three. I'll let you know in a few days if it's ready to bake!

October Weekends

I watched the sunrise this morning after taking my friend Lina to the airport. Somehow watching the day begin makes me feel closer to God.

I went home and took a little nap before going to breakfast at Sabrina’s with my little sister Corinne. We also visited a thrift store, a vintage shop and Old Navy where I thought about purchasing these shorts and this jacket until I saw how long the line was.

We also picked up a loaf of bread from Sarcone’s. I’m thinking of making a pot of chili tomorrow and serving the bread with it. Yum!

The past week and a half has been busy! I moved out of my little studio which means I completed my goal to live a year on my own. I moved into a new house with great roommates onto a street that I love. I accepted my dream job and danced away at a lifelong friends wedding.

This weekend friends opened up a coffee shop in Kensington called Leotah's Place. I headed over with some friends to celebrate their grand opening.

A Whale of a Good Time

I haven't been doing much shopping these days but when my friend Lana was in town last week I had trouble resisting her invitation to meet up in Center City and go to Urban Outfitters. She pointed out this dress that she thought was 'me'. I tried it on and now it's in my closet. It would be perfect for a day wedding or a barbecue. I can't wait to wear it!

I remember the day instant messenger entered my life. I was 13 and I ran home from school to sign on and chat with the friends I had just seen 20 minutes earlier. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Our generation is the last to know life without the Internet and one day we’ll be telling stories of 'the days of dial-up'. It’s hard to believe how much public forums can play apart in our lives but here I am blogging away.

And what about getting asked out over the Internet? I'm not even talking about dating sites, I'm talking Facebook. A guy sees you at a party and he may or may not talk to you that night but you go home to find the 'friend request'. A few weeks later he starts to respond to status updates and you realize something is up. Eventually, you receive the private message regarding the 'hang out'. I'm not going to lie, it's flattering.

I’ve been to the Rocket Cat way too much in the last week but it ends up always being the perfect spot to meet up and grab a cup of coffee in the neighborhood with a friend. I also love a good bagel and veggie cream cheese.

On the side of the shop you can now find a mural by Shepard Fairey who also happened to design the poster for Obama’s campaign.

A few weeks ago I went to Sweet Freedom Bakery with my friend Patty to catch up with an old friend who happens to be one of the owners, Heather. I’m definitely ready to go back for another treat that won’t bother my belly!

Mint has been a popular nail color this year but I’ve had so much trouble finding the right shade. Check out this great polish by RGB and all their other amazing shades. It’s a little on the pricey side but I think it would be the perfect Spring treat for your toes!

Something Silly

My mom (who works with sixth and seventh graders) introduced me to sillybandz a few months ago. They remind me of those rubber bracelets my older sister and I would wear in the late 80’s and early 90’s while dancing around to Madonna and Wilson Phillips. And who can forget slap bracelets?

I've always wanted to get a tattoo and after going through a year of learning a lot about love, heartbreak, dating, being single, and finding love in and after all of that I decided on hearts. I also think my friend Lana has the most adorable tattoos that include stars on the sides of her hands. She was my inspiration for placement and is an amazing friend. Lana moved to Portland in the fall and is visiting Philadelphia this weekend!
